St. Petersburg is the only large megapolis situated at the latitude of 60 North. It is located at the same latitude as Greenland, Alaska and Chukotka, but there are no major cities like St. Petersburg in these places.
The average temperature in January is a mere 7.7 degrees below zero – St. Petersburg is not afflicted by Siberian frosts.
Petersburg stands on 42 islands. The city contains around 100 canals, rivers and waterways, the major one of which is the Neva. Part of the famed ancient trade route from ‘the Varangians to the Greeks’ passed along the Neva.
